In this fight against Iran, Netanyahu has become the biggest "victim."
A poll released on June 21 shows Netanyahu's approval rating has dropped from 40.5% in March to just 29.4% today. The main reason for this sharp decline is his poor performance in the military campaign against Iran.
The reason for this poor performance lies in what Israeli voters truly want: a complete defeat of Iran and Hezbollah, and the capture of Lebanon’s security zone. In reality, however, the U.S. forced a ceasefire, excluded Israel from the agreement, and left Israel with almost no tangible gains.
Meanwhile, at the White House, recent developments show a clear distancing from this Israeli prime minister. In his speech on the evening of the 15th, Netanyahu claimed that President Trump was deliberately avoiding him, and he himself didn’t even know the contents of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement.
During the G7 summit, Trump referred to this once-close ally as “a very small partner.” On June 20, Trump also shared on social media an article titled “Netanyahu’s Re-election Uncertain—Trump Holds the Upper Hand.”
It’s clear now that the more hardline Netanyahu becomes, the more he alienates the U.S.; the more he compromises, the more he loses support among Israeli voters. Whether he takes a tough stance or makes concessions, he faces a dead end. In this war against Iran, Netanyahu won face but lost substance; achieved local gains but sacrificed the overall strategy; and ultimately gambled away his entire political future.
