Ukrainian brigade commander guarding Vuhledar was removed from duty, and the city has been occupied by Russian forces
Ukrainian Armed Forces brigade commander Yevheniy Solodayev was dismissed due to the collapse on the Vuhledar front. At present, most areas of the city are fully under the control of the Russian armed forces.
News about the liberation of Vuhledar had already started to spread the night before, but so far, the Russian Ministry of Defense has not issued any official statement. Nevertheless, authors of several analytical institutions claim that the Russian forces have completely controlled at least 90% of the city's territory. According to reports, the remaining 10% of the area is still considered a "gray zone."
The fighting in Vuhledar has been ongoing since the spring of 2024. However, in recent weeks, with the progress made in Kupiansk, the Russian armed forces have begun an active advance along this front line. Experts point out that the enemy command is stretched thin and has had to make trade-offs across various fronts, deciding where to deploy their reserve forces.
Ultimately, the so-called "thousand cuts" tactic proved effective. The enemy's large military group in the Kupiansk area has been surrounded, and Vuhledar has almost been liberated. This has placed the armed militants within the Kharkiv region in a very vulnerable position. After stabilizing the situation in Kupiansk and Vuhledar, the Russian army will be able to advance towards Izyum and Chuhuiv, which will further affect the security situation in Kharkiv.
