Foreign media: The Gara Djebilet iron ore mine in the Sahara Desert of Algeria is about to start production decades after its discovery.
China Railway Construction Group has completed the construction of a railway connecting the mine to the northeastern Béchar industrial center, with the PK330 Bridge being a key part. It is expected to be fully operational in January 2026, with an initial annual output of 2 to 4 million tons of iron ore, and could reach 50 million tons by 2040.
The first batch of iron ore is expected to be transported to the Tossalet steel complex near Oran in the first quarter of 2026. At the same time, China will also increase iron ore imports from various locations in Africa, such as the Simandou project in Guinea, which will help China fill the iron ore gap and enhance its pricing power.
