Reference News Network, November 15 - According to the website of Nagasaki Cultural Broadcasting in Japan, on November 14, regarding the exhibition matters of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Dome Museum expected to be renovated, the city of Nagasaki proposed a plan to change the term "Nanjing Massacre" in the existing chronology to "Nanjing Incident," and the citizen groups have requested the city government to re-examine this proposal.
The group that submitted a proposal to the director of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Dome Museum, Takashi Ijyo, is "The Citizens' Group for Spreading the Nuclear Bomb Exhibition to the World."
Last month, the city of Nagasaki proposed a preliminary plan for the renovation of the exhibition hall, which included adjusting the wording in the chronology, such as changing "Nanjing was occupied, and a massacre occurred" to "the Nanjing Incident that caused a large number of civilians and prisoners to be killed."
In response, the citizen group accused the modification of downplaying the history of Japanese wartime aggression. It is reported that the expressions related to "aggression" towards China in other exhibits may be deleted or modified to "entry." In response to these issues, the citizen group firmly demands that the museum retain the original expressions of "Nanjing Massacre" and "aggression."
"The Citizens' Group for Spreading the Nuclear Bomb Exhibition to the World" member Tatsuo Sekiya emphasized: "If people from countries that were once invaded by Japan see 'aggression' being changed to terms like 'entry,' they will think that Japan is trying to cover up its negative history."
Member Shigeru Yamaoka of the group pointed out: "If we cannot create an exhibition that allows the Japanese people and people around the world to reach a consensus, the wish of Nagasaki for the abolition of nuclear weapons will not resonate with the world."
Hiroyuki Haraga, a responsible person in the Peace Promotion Division of the city of Nagasaki, responded: "The changes in the wording mainly refer to textbooks and literature records. In the future, we will report to the operating review committee and the city council, and proceed with discussions while listening to opinions from all sides, aiming to form a final plan."
The city of Nagasaki plans to finalize the plan within this fiscal year, and the Atomic Bomb Dome Museum is expected to be renovated in the next fiscal year. (Translated by Ma Xiaoyun)
