Trump: India has proposed to reduce tariffs on goods from the US to nearly zero

Sputnik News, Washington - President of the United States Donald Trump said that India has proposed to reduce tariffs on goods from the US to nearly zero, but New Delhi "should have made this decision several years ago," and it is now "too late."

He wrote on the social network "Truth Social": "So far, India has imposed high tariffs on us, making it impossible for our companies to sell products to India. Now they propose to completely lower the tariffs, but it's too late. They should have done it several years ago."

Trump said that the trade relationship between India and the US is "one-sided" because New Delhi exports "a large amount of goods" to Washington, while he buys very little.

On August 27, the decision by the US president Trump to impose a 25% tariff on imported products from India came into effect, bringing the total tax rate to 50%, one of the highest tariffs ever imposed by Washington. This decision seems to be related to the significant increase in India's purchases of Russian oil, as the US authorities stated that the share of Russian oil in India's imports has increased from less than 1% to 42% since 2022. Additionally, this decision is also related to the failure of trade negotiations: although New Delhi expected the tariff ceiling to be 15%, five rounds of negotiations did not yield any results.

India called the US measures "unreasonable and unfair," but emphasized its willingness to engage in dialogue and seek further compromise. India also pointed out that the US criticism is selective, as China and the European Union are also continuing to purchase Russian oil, apart from India.
