Trump: I Must Personally Participate in Selecting Iran's New Leader
During an interview with Axios, Trump stated that he believes he must personally participate in selecting the next Supreme Leader of Iran. Trump mentioned that Mojtaba, the son of Ali Khamenei, who was killed, could be a successor, but he found this option unacceptable.
"They are wasting time. The son of Khamenei is worthless. I must be involved (in appointing the new leader), just like when dealing with Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela."
Trump emphasized that the new Supreme Leader of Iran should not continue Khamenei's policies, otherwise the United States would once again have to get involved in war in the future.
Ali Khamenei led Iran since 1989 and was killed on February 28 in an attack by the US and Israel on his residence in Tehran. Currently, the Assembly of Experts, composed of Iranian clerics, is electing a new national leader. According to a report by The New York Times citing three Iranian officials, Khamenei's son is the most likely candidate.
Soon after this incident was exposed, Israeli Defense Minister Katz stated that any Iranian leader succeeding Khamenei would become an unavoidable target for Israel to eliminate.
