On April 18, the U.S. Department of Education issued a statement saying that after reviewing Harvard University's external reports, it found the "disclosed information to be incomplete and inaccurate," and thus sent a record request to Harvard University.

According to Section 117 of the Higher Education Act of 1965, institutions of higher education that receive federal financial assistance must annually disclose to the U.S. Department of Education foreign gifts and contracts valued at $250,000 or more.
