Trump's attempt to target political opponents faces another setback as a judge rules his chosen prosecutors' appointments illegal
On Monday, a federal judge dismissed criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York State Attorney General Letitia James brought by the Trump administration, ruling that President Trump's appointment of prosecutors was unlawful.
The two rulings by the judge dealt a blow to the Department of Justice. In the previous weeks, Trump had publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute several of his prominent critics, and the Department of Justice subsequently filed lawsuits against Comey and James. The judge agreed with Comey and James' argument that the government illegally bypassed the usual confirmation procedures by appointing Hagan.
The judge wrote: "This behavior is unusual. It means that as long as the Attorney General approves afterward, the government can send any ordinary citizen, whether or not they are a lawyer, into a grand jury to obtain an indictment. This cannot become the law."
The Department of Justice may appeal this decision. (Wen Bu Nao)
