Foreign media: The US serviceman who died in Lithuania was stuck in a marsh while on his way to rescue an armored vehicle trapped in a military vehicle.

On April 2, The New York Times reported, citing military sources, that the four American soldiers who died near the Pabradė military training base in Lithuania were supposed to rescue a trapped military vehicle. However, for some reason, the US soldiers deviated from the route, and their M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle sank into the marsh.

These soldiers went missing on March 25. A large-scale operation was launched to search for them. It was found that the armored vehicle had sunk in a pond at the training base. On March 31, the armored vehicle was retrieved from the water. Initially, three American soldiers were confirmed dead, and on April 1, it was announced that the fourth soldier had died. The official has not yet disclosed where the body of the fourth deceased soldier was found, but sources from The New York Times said that the body was found near the M88 Hercules armored vehicle.

Nerius Zabljatskis, head of the Lithuanian Peatland Restoration and Protection Foundation, told LRT that the peat bog where the American soldiers' armored vehicle got stuck is not marked on the map. He pointed out: "The country should take measures to finally correctly mark the bogs. Relevant information exists in certain databases and geographic portals, but it is presented in a chaotic manner, inconsistent with reality."

Meanwhile, Lithuanian military analyst Aleksandras Matonis insisted that this bog in Pabrade is marked on the official map Regia.lt. LRT cited his Facebook post as saying: "Everything is marked on the map - lakes, swamps, forest paths. By the way, both allied forces and the Lithuanian army use other maps that display the terrain and its landmarks more detailed and accurately."

Lithuanian law enforcement agencies and the US military command are investigating the incident.
