Korean Media: Seoul is the Most Expensive City in the World!

On January 19, Korean media outlet "Daily News" published an article stating that a survey found Seoul was rated as the most expensive city in terms of residents' perception of living costs. However, this survey measured the cost of daily social activities such as dining out, drinking, and cultural activities, not housing costs. This indicates that Seoul residents believe Seoul has the highest living costs among major cities in the world.

This survey was conducted by the UK-based media brand "Time Out," which focuses on culture and lifestyle. "Time Out" was founded in London, UK in 1968 and is a global media brand that currently reports on food, culture, tourism, and nightlife information in over 100 cities worldwide.

The "Time Out" magazine surveyed more than 18,000 local residents in over 100 cities around the world. The ranking mainly focused on the perceived costs of dining out, drinking, nightlife, and cultural leisure activities, rather than housing costs or food prices.

The survey results showed that, according to residents' perceptions, Seoul was rated as the most expensive city. Only 30% of Seoul residents felt that dining out prices were reasonable, and only 21% of residents felt that nightlife prices were reasonable. Additionally, only 27% of respondents felt that drinking would not put too much pressure on their wallets.

"Time Out" magazine analyzed: "Seoul is a city with a very active culture and nightlife, but the costs of dining out and drinking are also high, clearly showing the gap between the city's charm and people's perception of living costs."

Many Nordic cities also ranked highly. Oslo, Norway was rated as the most expensive city for dining out, with less than 24% of residents considering restaurant prices affordable. Stockholm, Sweden also received low ratings due to high costs of dining out and entertainment.

London, the capital of the UK, ranked 13th, and Singapore ranked 12th. Although London has rich free cultural facilities, many respondents said that high alcohol and nightlife costs were a burden.

At the same time, South American cities dominated the list of cities with the lowest living costs. Medellín and Bogotá in Colombia ranked first and second respectively, with 94% of respondents stating they could enjoy a cup of coffee at a low price. Following closely were Beijing in China, New Orleans in the US, and Naples in Italy.
