Germany's exports to the United States fell 7.7% year-on-year in May

The United States remains Germany's largest export destination, but after the tariff war broke out, Germany's exports to the US dropped sharply.

In May this year, Germany's exports declined again. According to the latest data released by the German Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday, exports in May fell by 1.4% compared to April. The total value of Germany's exports in that month was 129.4 billion euros. Especially exports to the United States shrank significantly.

Compared to the same period last year, the total volume of goods exported by companies increased by 0.4%. The total value of Germany's imports in May was 111.1 billion euros, a decrease of 3.8% compared to April, but an increase of 4.2% compared to May 2024.

Although most of Germany's exports still go to the United States, exports to the United States plummeted by 7.7%, dropping to 12.1 billion euros, the lowest level since March 2022 (11.9 billion euros). Exports to China also declined, falling 2.9% to 6.8 billion euros.

In general, exports to countries outside the EU fell by 0.3%, and exports of goods to other EU countries decreased by 2.2%.

Carsten Brzeski, an analyst at ING, called it "another disappointing month for German exports." Data shows that the growth in exports in February and March was "almost entirely" due to提前 shipping to the United States due to the imminent tariffs.
