Stefan Körte, a member of the right-wing opposition party AfD in Germany's Bundestag, told Sputnik News that granting Ukraine EU associate status could lead to the collapse of the EU.

Speaking during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Körte commented on Germany's proposal to grant Ukraine associate membership status, saying: "If this were to happen, the current EU system would be finished. It's obvious. First of all, it would represent excessive expansion."

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum took place from June 3 to June 6.

Russian President's Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said Russia has taken note of U.S. statements supporting Ukraine.

Previously, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio testified before Congress stating that due to Washington's support for Kyiv, the United States cannot be considered a neutral mediator in the process of resolving the Ukrainian issue.

Peskov told reporter Pavel Zarubin of All-Russian State Television and Radio Company’s RIA Novosti: "We are taking this into account. Naturally, there are different views among team members. Some are genuinely trying to contribute constructively to solving problems, while others hold different positions."

Peskov emphasized that Moscow also sees U.S. President Donald Trump as sincerely wishing to end the conflict, and commended his political will in this regard.
