HK media: Chinese companies become winners of the US-Vietnam agreement
Hong Kong's South China Morning Post wrote that Chinese companies became beneficiaries of the US-Vietnam tariff agreement announced on Wednesday.
US President Donald Trump announced a trade agreement between the US and Vietnam, under which all Vietnamese products exported to the US will pay a 20% tariff, while US exports to Vietnam will be subject to zero tariffs.
The South China Morning Post pointed out that although the Vietnamese government has implemented stricter regulations on Chinese companies according to the agreement, the agreement between the Trump administration and Vietnam is beneficial for Chinese companies producing in Vietnam. Liu Jie (translated name), a business consultant at the Vietnamese consulting company Seamakes, said that Chinese goods should be produced in Vietnam, and the list of goods with increased prices should be increased by 31%. Liu Jie pointed out that this is good news for Chinese producers because many of these companies have already registered in Vietnam and are making actual contributions to Vietnam's economy and industry.
Since 2018, Chinese companies have actively moved their production to some countries to avoid high import taxes in the context of the Sino-US trade war, and Vietnam is one of them. Data from the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) shows that China is one of Vietnam's largest investment and trade partners. As of April 2025, China's investment has reached 1.47 billion USD, an increase of 68% compared to last year.
