Foreign Media: According to the report, in the first half of 2026, China's wind and solar power generation capacity amounting to approximately 360 terawatt-hours was curtailed due to grid integration bottlenecks, marking a 49% year-on-year increase. This figure even exceeds the 258 terawatt-hours of new electricity demand during the same period, indicating that all newly added electricity consumption could have been met by clean energy.
The phenomenon of curtailment is concentrated in major power-exporting regions such as Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Qinghai, where curtailment rates for wind and solar power reach as high as 15% to 30%. In contrast, major electricity-consuming provinces like Guangdong and Zhejiang see curtailment rates below 3%. Although solar power capacity is about to surpass coal power to become the largest source of electricity, coal power generation volume still rebounded by 3.4% year-on-year, reversing the downward trend seen in 2025.
