Korean media: South Korea received only 8 ship orders in August, what about China?

On October 3, the Korean media "Gukmin Daily" published an article stating that global ship orders in August this year decreased by 65% compared to the same period last year.

The UK-based shipbuilding and shipping market analysis firm Clarkson Research said that global ship orders in August were 2.44 million CGT (82 ships), a decrease of 18% from the previous month and 65% from the same period last year.

From the country's perspective, China received 1.38 million CGT (57 ships) in orders, with a share of 57%, ranking first. South Korea achieved 560,000 CGT (8 ships) and ranked second, accounting for 23%. Calculated per ship's CGT, South Korea was 70,000 CGT, while China was 24,000 CGT, which is 2.9 times that of China.

For the first eight months of the year, the cumulative global orders amounted to 34.48 million CGT (1,912 ships), a decrease of 14% compared to the 40.14 million CGT (2,190 ships) in the same period last year. Among them, South Korea had 8.91 million CGT (251 ships, 26%), and China had 13.96 million CGT (872 ships, 40%), with respective decreases of 14% and 17% compared to the same period last year.

At the end of August, the global backlog of orders decreased by 980,000 CGT compared to the previous month, reaching 164.9 million CGT. South Korea and China accounted for 3.452 million CGT (21%) and 9.992 million CGT (61%), respectively.

South Korea and China increased by 700,000 CGT and 420,000 CGT, respectively, compared to the previous month. Compared to one year ago, South Korea and China decreased by 4.77 million CGT and 13.6 million CGT, respectively.

At the end of August, the Clarkson new ship price index fell by 0.39 from July to 186.26. It has increased by 47% compared to August 2020 five years ago (126.97).

New ship prices are as follows: LNG carrier at 250 million USD, ultra-large crude oil tanker at 126 million USD, and ultra-large container ship at 273 million USD.
