Media: The UK has designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization
According to a statement by Angela Eagle, the UK's Minister of State for Security, reported by Sky News, the United Kingdom has officially designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
On Wednesday, the UK's "Tackling National Threats Bill" came into effect. The legislation grants the government new powers to designate foreign state entities that are "hostile" to the UK as terrorist organizations.
Sky News reported: "The government has announced it will use its new powers to place Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the list of terrorist organizations."
In January this year, The Times reported that the UK Home Office was preparing sanctions against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, the process was slowed due to the legal and diplomatic complexities involved in classifying a state institution as a terrorist organization. According to the report, both the UK’s foreign intelligence agency MI6 and the Foreign Office were concerned that such sanctions could disrupt diplomatic channels vital to the UK and its allies, potentially leading to the expulsion of British diplomats from Tehran.
