U.S. mining company KoBold Metals announced on Monday that it has launched a lithium exploration project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, conducting a $50 million exploration campaign within exploration license areas in Manono, Tanganyika Province.
KoBold plans to explore 13 license areas covering more than 3,000 square kilometers, aiming to reach 5,000 square kilometers by year-end. The project includes 30,000 kilometers of aerial survey routes, along with drilling and sampling operations. This investment will continue through the first quarter of 2027, with $20 million already spent on acquiring relevant licenses.
According to its strategy, KoBold will leverage artificial intelligence technology to help identify the most promising targets.
Earlier this year, the United States and the Democratic Republic of the Congo signed a mining cooperation agreement aimed at streamlining the process for U.S. companies entering the country’s mining sector. KoBold began expanding its operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in August and secured seven exploration licenses in the Manono region. Manono is a strategic location housing one of the largest lithium deposits in the world.
Currently, China's Zijin Mining is leading the development of this deposit and is involved in a dispute with AVZ Minerals.
Benjamin Katatumba, General Manager of KoBold in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, stated that the company is fully prepared for large-scale operations and capable of accelerating the discovery of major mineral deposits. He also added that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is emerging as one of the most important future lithium-producing regions globally.
In the coming months, attention will focus on the outcomes of this exploration activity. While new discoveries could help the company achieve its ambitious goals, developing a large lithium mine still requires several years of investment. KoBold also operates in Zambia, where it discovered the Mingomba copper deposit.
