On Friday, Trump threatened to raise tariffs on EU passenger cars and trucks to 25% starting next week, citing (in his view) the EU's failure to fulfill the trade agreement reached between the two sides. Under the "Ternberg Agreement" reached between the EU and the US in July last year, the current US tariff on European automobiles and auto parts stands at 15%. A week earlier, EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič had just met with officials from the Trump administration in Washington, and afterward expressed his belief that the agreement remained solid.
