According to the message on the Ministry of Commerce website, the second meeting of the 2025 G20 Development Working Group was held in Cape Town, South Africa from April 14 to 16.
At the meeting, China expressed that international trade is the engine of global development. The recent U.S. government's introduction of the "reciprocal tariff" policy has seriously damaged the international trade system, disrupted the global industrial chain and supply chain, and had a continuous impact on the world economy, which is tantamount to depriving the developing countries of their development rights. It is a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying. The G20 is the main forum for international economic cooperation and shoulders the responsibility of solving major problems in global economic governance and jointly responding to global challenges. G20 members should adhere to the correct direction of globalization, strengthen unity, restrain the use of trade restriction measures, oppose trade protectionism, and jointly maintain a rules-based multilateral trading system.
During the meeting, China exchanged extensive opinions with the South African presidency and other G20 members on the U.S. imposition of "reciprocal tariffs", calling for enhanced cooperation among all parties to resolve trade differences through equal, respectful, and mutually beneficial consultations, and jointly address emergency situations in international economic and trade relations, creating favorable conditions for achieving sustainable development goals. Many members expressed high concern over the serious impact of the U.S. "reciprocal tariff" on the multilateral trading system and emphasized the need to uphold a rules-based multilateral trading system, strengthen position coordination, and jointly respond to the current global trade tensions.
The meeting also conducted in-depth discussions on development issues such as global public goods, development financing and illicit financial flows, and social protection minimum standards, while initiating consultations on the outcome documents of relevant topics to prepare for the results of the July Development Ministerial Meeting.
