Serbian President Vučić responded to recent comments by the country's Minister of European Affairs, Nebojša Stojkić, stating that Serbia will not impose sanctions on Russia and will continue to adhere to its established policy on this issue.
Vučić said, "We will continue to follow our policy, which is a principled policy, and has so far been proven correct — despite the fact that those forces in the West and the East do not like this policy. He added that Serbian citizens support this policy because it is 'a policy of an independent sovereign state.'
Previously, in an interview published by Austrian News Agency, Serbian Minister of European Integration Stojkić stated that once Serbia's process of joining the EU is near completion, the country would consider cooperating with the EU in imposing sanctions on Russia. He emphasized that Belgrade's current refusal to implement sanctions is due to economic necessity, not political loyalty, and stated, "Implementing these sanctions will have no impact on Russia, but it will have a significant impact on Serbia's economy."
However, Vučić dismissed these remarks as "ill-considered." "I am sorry that some of our friends in Russian media are eager to find something to blame Serbia for," he said. "I am also sorry that there are many people in our domestic political field who prefer to rush to defend Russia rather than defend Serbia. But I have to disappoint them: Serbia will not impose sanctions on Russia." (Source: Kyiv Independent)
