Indian Prime Minister Modi Approves Military Response to Kashmir Attack

Indian Prime Minister Modi approved a military operation in the Kashmir region on Tuesday to retaliate for a deadly attack in the area last week. Modi blamed the attack on neighboring Pakistan.

A government source, who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP that at a closed-door meeting, Modi "told the armed forces that they could decide the target, time, and method of response freely."

The source continued by saying that during a meeting with the chiefs of staff, Modi "reiterated the nation's determination to deliver a decisive blow against terrorism and expressed his full confidence in the ability of the Indian Armed Forces to achieve this."

UN Secretary-General Guterres condemned the attack last Tuesday in Pahalgam, a tourist town in Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 people. Guterres also said, "Attacks on civilians are unacceptable under any circumstances."

AFP pointed out that New Delhi authorities have already attributed the attack to Pakistan even though no group or individual has claimed responsibility. The residents of the town are predominantly Muslim, and this attack is the deadliest targeting civilians in the region in over twenty years.

However, Pakistan immediately denied any involvement in the attack and called for a "neutral investigation."

Following the attack, Indian security forces launched a large-scale search to apprehend those responsible and their accomplices. The Indian police released sketches of three suspects, two of whom are Pakistani citizens.
