South Korean media: BYD's pure electric vehicle sales surged by 39% in the first quarter, almost certain to surpass Tesla!
On April 2nd, South Korean newspaper "Business Post" published an article stating that BYD's global pure electric vehicle sales in the first quarter this year increased by 39% compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, Tesla is very likely to be surpassed by BYD, as its electric vehicle sales declined in the first quarter, especially in Europe.
According to the "Financial Times of Britain", BYD announced that its pure electric vehicle sales in the first quarter were 416,388 units, a year-on-year increase of 39%.
If hybrid electric vehicle sales are included, the growth rate will be even higher.
BYD's sales of pure electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles in the first quarter reached 986,098 units, up 58% year-on-year.
The "Financial Times of Britain" analyzed that "BYD has benefited from strong domestic market demand for hybrid electric vehicles" and "has actively expanded overseas markets".
Tesla, which is competing with BYD for the top spot in global pure electric vehicle sales, will release its first-quarter sales figures soon.
The market expects Tesla's electric vehicle sales in the first quarter to reach 377,000 units. Even if Tesla reaches the market expectation, it will still lag behind BYD by about 40,000 units.
Deutsche Bank and Royal Bank of Canada, two investment banks, expect Tesla's sales to be 345,000 units and 364,000 units respectively.
Tesla sold 387,000 vehicles in the first quarter last year. The reason why this year's expectations are lower than last year is that Tesla's sales in various European countries decreased in January and February.
In fact, Tesla's sales in France and Sweden fell by 36.83% and 63.9% respectively compared to the same period last year.
The "Financial Times of Britain" commented that "BYD and Tesla show a striking contrast in electric vehicle sales."
