Reference News Network reported on April 6 that the Singapore Straits Times website quoted The Wall Street Journal as reporting that American voters elected Trump president because they were optimistic about his economic policies. However, a latest poll found that American voters' confidence in him is now gradually turning into doubt after Trump pushed for higher tariffs after taking office, with people worried about economic downturn and inflation.

The poll conducted by The Wall Street Journal from March 27 to April 1 found that 54% of respondents opposed Trump's tariff increases on imported goods, which was 12 percentage points more than those who supported it. About three quarters of voters believed that tariffs would raise prices, compared to 68% in January.

This poll was conducted before Trump announced the large-scale reciprocal tariff plan on April 2, when he had already imposed new tariffs on some products from China, Canada, Mexico and other countries.

Voters' negative views on tariffs are significantly different from the open attitude shown in previous polls. According to the polls by The Wall Street Journal in January and last August, voters gave "slightly positive support" to the policy of imposing tariffs on imported goods. At that time, Trump had not yet taken office and the tariff plans were not specifically clear.

However, this latest poll shows that despite Trump's promise that "tariffs will soon make America rich again," voters are uneasy about his performance in dealing with inflation. Voters who give negative evaluations outnumber those who give positive evaluations by 15 percentage points.

In addition, voters who give negative evaluations of Trump's management of the economy also outnumber those who give positive evaluations by 8 percentage points, showing a significant shift compared to the result of 10 percentage points more positive evaluations than negative evaluations in late October last year.

Despite this, the latest poll also showed that 46% of voters still approve of Trump's overall performance, while 51% disapprove. The result of the January poll remained unchanged.
