The World Health Organization announced on Saturday that the Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda have constituted a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern." As of Saturday, the Ituri Province in the DRC has reported 8 laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 suspected deaths. In neighboring Uganda, two laboratory-confirmed cases (including one death) were linked to travelers from the DRC, with no apparent connection between the two cases. The WHO stated that there is currently significant uncertainty regarding the true number of infections and the geographical spread of this event. This marks the 17th outbreak of Ebola in the DRC since the virus's first appearance in the 1970s.
