Former UK Ambassador: Israel may provoke the US to engage in war with Iran
In an interview with Sputnik, Peter Ford, former UK Ambassador to Syria, commented on the consequences of mutual attacks between the two sides in the Middle East conflict, stating that Israel might instigate provocations to provoke direct US military intervention in the war between Israel and Iran.
Ford speculated: "We are likely to see Israel staging an attack soon, forcing the US to intervene."
He also pointed out that Washington's wise move would be to stand aside and let Israel "pay for its own mistakes." Ford believed that President Trump might incline toward this route. Based on past experiences, there is no reason to believe that Trump can withstand pressure from Israel and its overseas groups for a long time."
Ford noted that the current events are just the "second round" of the conflict, with the first round ending fruitlessly a year ago. He said that Israel may not achieve decisive results, but as long as Netanyahu "is still in power and intent on (striking) Iran," the conflict will happen again.
The former British ambassador also believed that the opportunity to sign a nuclear agreement with Iran was low and would continue to decrease.
He said: "If Iran can hold up, why should it give in? The possibility of using force to make Iran submit is decreasing every day."
When talking about regional peace prospects, Ford emphasized: "The Middle East has not seen real peace processes for 20 years."
He concluded: "The most ideal result of the current conflict is Netanyahu's personal defeat, which may open up space for new initiatives."
