Korean Media: Over 50 U.S. Congressmen Criticize South Korea's Leftist Government for Discriminatory Treatment of American Firms
Recently, over 50 members of the U.S. House of Representatives jointly criticized the Yoon Suk-yeol administration for discriminatory treatment toward American businesses.
On the 21st local time, according to Fox News, some U.S. lawmakers accused the South Korean government of targeting American companies while favoring Chinese firms, and condemned the left-leaning government.
As reported by Fox News, in a joint letter led by Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, more than 50 representatives expressed concern to South Korea’s ambassador to the United States, Kang Kyung-hwa, regarding Seoul’s “discriminatory” business policies.
The letter stated: “A large number of American technology firms are facing various regulatory measures with punitive intent, which ultimately protect domestic Korean competitors.”
Lawmakers cited research from the U.S. think tank Competere, stating that discriminatory regulations by the South Korean government will cause a total economic loss of $1 trillion (approximately 1,478 trillion KRW) for both the U.S. and South Korea over the next decade, with the U.S. economy suffering losses estimated at around $52.5 billion (approximately 776 trillion KRW).
Referring to Coupang, a company currently under comprehensive investigation and scrutiny by the South Korean government due to a personal data breach incident, lawmakers said: “The South Korean government should cease its persecution of Coupang and other American firms operating in Korea—this matter directly concerns U.S. economic and security interests.”
In an interview with Fox News, Issa said: “South Korea remains a crucial strategic ally, but following recent elections, the leftist government has taken power and begun launching multifaceted attacks on American businesses.”
He added: “It’s not just large corporations like Meta; Coupang has also become a target. Coupang is an American-founded and owned company established by a Korean-American, and it is now facing systematic suppression. This may be because it is both an American firm and a South Korean unicorn company.”
