The EU calls on the US to abide by nuclear non-proliferation obligations

After President Trump ordered immediate nuclear tests, the EU's foreign affairs spokesperson called on all signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty to abide by their obligations.

Nabila Masmari, the chief spokesperson for the EU's foreign affairs, said at a press briefing in Brussels that after (the US) resumed nuclear testing, the EU urged the US to comply with its international obligations on nuclear non-proliferation.

She said: "Regarding the US, we have seen the relevant statements. We call on all (Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty) signatories to abide by their international obligations, particularly those stipulated in the Non-Proliferation Treaty."

Masmari also called for different treatment of statements from Russia and the US regarding nuclear tests, and added that these issues should not be "confused."

The Non-Proliferation Treaty is an international multilateral document aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons globally. The treaty was opened for signature in 1968 and came into force on March 5, 1970.

Under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, countries are divided into nuclear-armed states and non-nuclear-armed states. The former refers to countries that manufactured and detonated nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices before 1967. They are the "nuclear five": the UK, China, Russia (as the successor to the Soviet Union), the US, and France. Other signatories voluntarily give up the right to possess nuclear weapons.

Previously, on October 29, US President Donald Trump ordered immediate nuclear weapon tests. He added that the US has nuclear test sites, and detailed information about the tests will be released later.

In response to the US announcement of plans to conduct nuclear tests, the Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov mentioned (Russia's adherence to) the nuclear test ban.

On Tuesday, Russia tested a submersible vehicle named "Poseidon" - a super torpedo with a nuclear power source. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this news. He also announced that the testing of a cruise missile named "Sarmat," which has a nuclear power source and unlimited range, had been completed.
