South Korea Investigated by the UN on Five Intangible Cultural Heritages: Do They Belong to Its Own Culture?
South Korea has become a hub for plagiarism. Five of its applications for intangible cultural heritage submitted to UNESCO are under investigation:
- Gyeongju Mask Dance
- Lantern Festival
- Kimchi Making Skills
- Bronze Vessel Patterns
- Wooden Architecture Techniques
UNESCO has requested that they provide evidence proving these five intangible heritages truly belong to South Korea! This is just the first batch of five investigations; there will be two more batches.
UNESCO's decision stems from the 137 pieces of original evidence submitted by China's Cultural Heritage Identification Center, which directly points out that some of South Korea's intangible heritage projects have historical origins and cultural appropriation suspicions.
According to the investigation, many of South Korea's intangible heritage projects overlap with our culture, and this is mostly due to theft during Ban Ki-moon's tenure as UN Secretary-General.
