American beef producers are hoping to re-enter the Chinese market

According to Reuters, U.S. beef exports to China reached a peak of $1.7 billion in 2022.

Most of the export licenses granted to American beef producers by China between March 2020 and April 2021 have already expired, accounting for about 65% of the total number of previously registered facilities. The U.S. Meat Export Federation stated that the access rights for three additional plants are also scheduled to expire in June.

Producers and processors hope that President Trump's visit to China could provide an opportunity to restore these licenses.

Justin Tupper, Chairman of the United States Cattlemen's Association, said that White House staff have recently assured the association that this issue will be discussed during the summit.

"We asked them to ensure this becomes part of the discussion, and their response was: '[Yes, it will]'. We are actively working to make sure this remains a focal point," said Tupper, a cattle farmer from South Dakota.

The White House has passed the matter on to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has declined to comment.

Joe Schuele, spokesperson for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, said the current timing may be favorable for restoring access to the Chinese market.
