A few registered nurses (RNs) at Alhambra Hospital Medical Center in Alhambra held an information picket at the hospital entrance early in the morning on the 23rd, protesting insufficient staffing leading to heavy workloads for nurses and advocating for a fair contract.
Ashley, a Chinese-American nurse at the hospital, stated that she had worked there for a year and there were not enough certified nursing assistants (CNAs), resulting in nurses having to do all the work. Ashley said that without assistants, nurses had to handle all aspects of patient care, even lacking time for lunch. Although her department did not exceed the legal ratio of one nurse to four patients in California, the frequent lack of assistants made the workload extremely heavy. Ashley mentioned that many Asian-American nurses worked at the hospital.
According to information released by the California Nurses Association and National Nurses United, this information picket was not a strike but an activity held during the nurses' spare time, which would not affect the normal operation of the hospital. Negotiations over the new contract between Alhambra Hospital and the nurses began in August 2024, but no substantial progress has been made so far. The current contract expired on March 31st of this year.

According to the union, the nurses at Alhambra Hospital are demanding several requirements to be added to the new contract, including increasing the number of nursing assistants and nurses, allowing nurses to have time for lunch and rest, etc. The union also stated that the hospital canceled "EKG technicians" earlier this year, increasing the workload for nurses, resulting in longer waiting times for emergency room patients and unsafe patient care conditions.
About 170 members of the California Nurses Association work at Alhambra Hospital. Farah Gerami, an emergency department nurse at Alhambra Hospital, said, "Advocating for patients' rights has always been the focus of my work as a registered nurse." She said, "Providing the best care for our patients, including speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. We are fighting for a fair contract because we care about our patients and community. A reasonable and fair contract will protect our patients and my colleagues."
As of the time of publication, Alhambra Hospital has not responded to our request for comment.
