The latest NBC poll offers a glimmer of hope for the Democrats. According to NBC's latest nationwide poll, amid the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Democrats temporarily lead the Republicans by 8 percentage points, 50% to 42%, in the competition for the midterm elections next year - this is the largest lead one party has achieved on congressional ballots in NBC polls since the 2018 midterm elections.

Trump's approval rating is 43%, and his disapproval rating is 55%. More voters say that Trump has not met their expectations on several key issues that helped him return to the White House. About two-thirds of registered voters believe that the Trump administration performed poorly on the economy and cost of living; most also think he has failed to change the usual political operations in Washington.

While the Democrats are trying to propose alternatives, they still face low voter evaluations. In addition, as Trump continues to push wide-ranging executive actions on immigration and other key policy areas, voters consider "defending democracy and constitutional rights" and "cost of living issues" equally important. However, most voters believe that Trump is more likely to weaken the Constitution rather than defend it.

Most voters believe that the current government shutdown is mainly to blame on Trump and/or the Republican Congress.
