Foreign Media: China's First Implantable Brain-Computer Interface Approved, Challenging Neuralink's Global Leadership

Shennuo Medical Technology Company has recently received approval from the China National Medical Products Administration, becoming the world's first invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) system approved for commercial sale. The product is designed specifically for patients with spinal cord injuries, aiming to restore hand motor functions.

The device is about the size of a coin and is placed on the surface of the cerebral cortex in a wireless manner, without penetrating brain tissue, capable of reading the patient's neural signals and converting them into hand movement commands.

Shennuo Medical was founded by Xu Honglai (a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University) in 2011. It is currently preparing to list on the Sci-Tech Innovation Board of the Shanghai Stock Exchange and has signed an IPO tutoring agreement with CITIC Securities.

This approval is seen as a milestone in China's brain-computer interface field, marking that Chinese BCI startups are accelerating their efforts to catch up and even challenge Neuralink, a company under Elon Musk, under regulatory support and capital incentives.
