Korean Media: China on Track to Achieve 'Trillion-Dollar Surplus' Faster Than Last Year!

On October 14, South Korean media outlet *Herald Economic* published an article stating that driven by global investment enthusiasm in artificial intelligence, China’s exports surged more than 30% in September. The country is on track to record a $1 trillion annual trade surplus for the second consecutive year.

China’s export value rose 36.3% year-on-year in September, reaching $447.18 billion—significantly exceeding market expectations of 25.5% and marking the highest growth rate since February (39.6%) across seven months.

Imports in September amounted to $313.65 billion, up 31.0% compared to the same period last year, resulting in a trade surplus of $133.53 billion for the month.

As a result, the cumulative trade surplus from January to September reached $938.11 billion. It is projected to surpass the $1 trillion threshold as early as October. Given that the previous milestone was breached only in November of last year, this year’s figure may set a new historical high.

By region, exports to the United States increased by 39.6% to $47.88 billion, generating a trade surplus of $34 billion. In trade with the European Union, exports grew by 25.3%, while imports rose just 0.7%, leading to a record trade surplus of $34.8 billion.

Conversely, trade deficits emerged with South Korea and Japan. Imports from South Korea surged 94.3% year-on-year to $34.63 billion. On a detailed level, driven by the AI boom, semiconductor imports rose 74.7%, while semiconductor exports climbed 136%.
