Japanese Media: Scandal Over Japanese Man's Child Prostitution in Laos Reignites Controversy
According to a report by Japanese media outlet ABEMA TIMES on June 7: A Japanese man in his fifties was arrested in Laos for allegedly engaging in repeated illegal child prostitution activities locally, and has recently been detained by local police. Due to the large number of Japanese men traveling to rural areas of underdeveloped countries in Southeast Asia such as Laos and Cambodia specifically targeting underage girls for prostitution, embassies of Japan in both Laos and Cambodia have issued warnings accordingly.
Journalists from Japanese media traveled specially to Laos to conduct interviews and reports exposing the dark reality of child prostitution.
It is reported that in a village located nearly 200 kilometers north of Vientiane, the capital, a Japanese man in his fifties visits every few months, staying for one to two months each time. He has been detained on suspicion of involvement in child prostitution.
As investigations progressed, the man’s abnormal behavior began to surface. The hotel where he previously stayed provided testimony to the police, stating that the man once brought seven or eight underage girls with him in a single night—shocking and disturbing.
In Laos, due to lagging economic development, more and more girls are resorting to selling their bodies to support their families. Through interviews, Japanese reporters learned that transaction prices ranged from approximately 2,200 JPY (about 95 CNY) to 4,400 JPY (about 190 CNY). Locals said there were many customers from China and South Korea, but he added: “There are also many Japanese clients.”
