South Korean media: The U.S. leads in innovation, but China outperforms in commercialization
South Korean media: "The US leads in innovation, but China makes money first!" On April 17th, the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo published an article stating that the two giants, China and the United States, are fiercely competing in technology. As the strongest country in the world, the US has leading technical capabilities in many fields, but China is also growing rapidly and surpassing the US in many areas. With both countries competing in cutting-edge technologies ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) to quantum computing, a report analyzed their competitive landscape.
The American think tank Special Competition Studies Project (SCSP), founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, released a report titled "Welcome to the Arena" in February this year.
Thanks to its strong private sector ecosystem, global cooperation, and solid foundational technologies, the US leads in a series of cutting-edge technology fields. However, China has quickly caught up with or even surpassed the US as a tech powerhouse due to different strategies in developing advanced technologies.
The report stated: "The US leads in 'innovation,' but China leads in 'commercialization.'" This means that when the US proposes an innovative technology, China swiftly commercializes it to make money. A representative example is the field of synthetic biology. From 2012 to 2023, the US published 23,006 papers in this field (accounting for 33.6% of all papers), far ahead of China (13,122 papers). Based on these studies, technologies such as CRISPR gene editing and genome design have been developed. However, China has made remarkable progress in applying US research findings to commercial use. During the same period, China's share of global patents in synthetic biology was 49.1%, about four times that of the US (12.8%).
SCSP selected 12 major frontier technology fields and analyzed which country holds the advantage in each area. The results showed that China has an edge in four areas: "advanced batteries," "5G," "commercial drones," and "advanced manufacturing."
In terms of advanced batteries, China is considered to control the entire value chain from raw materials like lithium and graphite to the final product. China accounts for approximately 80% of global lithium-ion battery shipments and around 60% of the global electric vehicle battery market. In 5G infrastructure construction, China also leads significantly. China has about 4 million base stations (206 per 100,000 people), far exceeding the US with about 100,000 base stations (77 per 100,000 people). DJI, a Chinese company, is the leader in the commercial drone sector, controlling more than 90% of the global personal drone market.
However, the US remains the country leading in core technological innovation. It is exploring the future through the development of core technologies such as "quantum computing," which can greatly enhance existing computer processing speeds, and "nuclear fusion energy," the ultimate energy source. The US also maintains overwhelming global influence on social media and mobile platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
So, in which advanced technology fields are the competition between China and the US most intense? The report listed "artificial intelligence," "next-generation networks," and "biopharmaceuticals" as competitive areas. Since the release of the low-cost, high-performance AI model DeepSeek, China's artificial intelligence technology has received significant attention. However, based solely on current AI statistics, the US still dominates.
