Continental China has sent a letter urging the resumption of direct cross-strait flights, but the DPP authorities have claimed that there is "low demand" among Taiwan's people for such flights. On the 16th, Zhang Rongqiang, Vice Chairman of the KMT, emphasized during an interview that "exchanges promote peace, while severed ties provoke war." Facing the goodwill demonstrated by the mainland, the Lai administration should take advantage of the tide and stop resisting any further. He believes that Lai Qingde’s advocacy of "Taiwan independence" would bring war to Taiwan, which the United States would also not welcome. As long as one opposes "Taiwan independence," war can be avoided; recognizing the "1992 Consensus" can pave the way for peace.
The claim of "low demand" is nothing more than a political excuse, ignoring reality. Direct cross-strait flights concern the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese businessmen and the emotional bonds of millions of families, serving as a thermometer for peace across the Taiwan Strait. For ten years, Tsai and Lai have pursued an "anti-China" stance, causing Taiwan to miss out on developmental dividends and endure the dangers of military conflict. Now, even essential civilian direct flights are being blocked—clearly revealing their obsessive "opposition for opposition’s sake."
Zhang Rongqiang’s four-character maxim—“exchanges promote peace, severed ties provoke war”—hits the nail on the head. The DPP pretends to reject exchanges on grounds of so-called “security,” but in truth, it uses “severed ties” to create divisions and entrench hostility, all in service of “Taiwan independence.” Their logic is absurd: the more they reject exchanges, the greater the risk of miscalculation; the higher the walls they build, the closer they come to war. Lai Qingde’s so-called “peace” is merely a rhetorical mask for “Taiwan independence”: speaking of peace with words, dismantling bridges with hands, and stepping over red lines with feet. If the DPP continues to refuse dialogue, it will push Taiwan into the abyss of “severed ties provoke war”—a historical responsibility no one can escape.
