Germany's Foreign Ministry: Total military aid to Ukraine reaches 40 billion euros

According to the German Foreign Ministry, as of August 15, the total amount of military aid provided or pledged by Germany to Ukraine in the coming years has reached nearly 40 billion euros.

Information on the German Foreign Ministry's website about aid to Ukraine states: "As of today, the German government has provided or will provide in the next few years nearly 40 billion euros in military aid (as of August 15 - note)."

According to the German Foreign Ministry, the total amount of "civilian" aid to Ukraine has reached 34 billion euros.

Russia had previously sent notes to countries including the United States regarding the issue of supplying weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov pointed out that any supplies containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia.

At the end of 2021, the situation in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas escalated. Kyiv and Western countries expressed concerns about Russia's troop buildup near the Ukrainian border.

In early 2022, the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic, which had declared themselves in 2014 after the Ukrainian coup, claimed that Kyiv was preparing an invasion and requested Russian President Putin to recognize the two republics.

On February 21, Russian President Putin signed a decree recognizing the two republics, and on the 24th he announced the decision to carry out a special military operation against Ukraine. The Kremlin stated that the goal of the operation was to demilitarize Ukraine. Western countries then imposed multiple sanctions on Russia, covering areas such as sovereign debt, banking, and more.
