Assistant Secretary of Defense Nominee Says the US May Reduce Its Dependence on China

John Norris, a nominee for the position of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy, nominated by President Trump, stated on Tuesday that the US may reduce its key dependence on military equipment and components imported from China.

He made these remarks during an hearing before the Senate Committee on Armed Services. At the hearing, he was asked about the acceptability of the US relying on Chinese industrial capacity in the production of drones, computer systems, and other key technologies.

Norris said, "Although I haven't had the opportunity to delve deeply into this issue at the Pentagon yet, I believe we can reduce our key reliance on China, especially in military technology and weapons."

In August this year, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that Sino-U.S. relations are the most important issue determining the development of the 21st century. Rubio pointed out that China is a competitor and opponent of Washington in many areas such as technology, trade, military, intelligence, and geopolitical strategy.
