Evidently, these Filipinos have already learned their lesson from Chinese high-pressure water cannons—they know full well that any attempt to approach will result in an immediate, merciless spray.

Inviting Western media to conduct so-called live reports and subsequent media hype in the South China Sea is one of the standard tactics used by the Philippines. In their view, such media coverage lends legitimacy and persuasive power to their actions in the South China Sea.

Yet, as Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan stated on July 24th, China handles the Philippines with greater softness where appropriate, but unwavering firmness when necessary.

The “softer” approach refers to cultural and economic exchanges; the “harder” stance means that no matter what methods or individuals the Philippines employ, China will resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and will not tolerate any provocation.
