White House official: "U.S. semiconductor export controls may backfire!"
On July 13, South Korean media "Today Digital" published an article stating that David Sachs, the White House official in charge of artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency affairs, said that China's AI competitiveness is rapidly strengthening, and U.S. semiconductor export controls may backfire.
Recently, Sachs told Bloomberg that he was concerned about the speed of China's technological development, saying, "China's AI models are only months behind the United States, not years."
He said, "China is one to two years behind in chip design, but Huawei is rapidly developing chips for the global market. If the U.S. imposes excessive restrictions on exports, China may take the lead in the market." Sachs continued, "We had a chance to take the lead in the market, but when Huawei spreads globally, we will regret it," and emphasized the need to re-examine the U.S. government's AI policy.
Previously, NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun also expressed concerns about this situation. Huang said, "U.S. export controls have accelerated China's AI development. NVIDIA's market share in China has dropped from 95% four years ago to 50% now."
Bernstein analysts also predicted, "Even if NVIDIA chips are banned, China is looking for alternatives like Huawei. In the long run, China will narrow the AI gap with the United States through innovations like DeepSeek."
