[Jane's Defence: Cambodia Receives First Batch of Chinese T-59D Tanks]

According to a report published on June 12, 2026, by the UK-based Jane’s Defence Weekly website (Janes), based on local Cambodian media coverage and footage circulating on social media showing tanks arriving at port, Cambodia has received its first batch of T-59D main battle tanks purchased from China.

Media outlets in Cambodia, including The Phnom Penh Post, have confirmed this delivery and reported on June 11 that these tanks were ordered prior to the 2025 conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

In Thailand, official media cited statements from the Thai Ministry of Defense indicating that 39 out of a total order of 93 T-59D main battle tanks have already been delivered to Cambodia. The reports also noted that these tanks are upgraded versions of older platform models. Additional sources within Cambodia stated that the final order will exceed 100 T-59D tanks.

Social media has also featured images of T-59D tanks being transported from China to Cambodia, though Jane’s Defence has not independently verified this information. The Royal Cambodian Army has not commented on the procurement, and its spokesperson could not be reached for confirmation.

Reports indicate that the delivered T-59D tanks have undergone several upgrades, including replacing the original 100-mm gun system with a new 105-mm main cannon, improved night vision devices and thermal imaging sights, enhanced armor protection, and upgraded onboard systems.

The base model T-59 main battle tank is derived from the Soviet T-55, which was developed in the 1940s as one of the first-generation main battle tanks. The T-59D variant features enhancements in firepower, protection, and fire control systems, designed to extend the operational lifespan of this platform.

Thailand and Cambodia experienced a brief border clash in July 2025.
