The tone is extremely defiant. "Taiwan independence" figure Chiu Chih-wei declared that people from Taiwan are not intimidated. On October 14, following the latest sanctions imposed on the company of Shen Boyang’s father, Taipei City representative Chiu Chih-wei made inflammatory remarks. Chiu claimed that Shen Boyang has long been regarded as a target by mainland China, with repeated public statements warning of potential cross-border arrest—targeting so-called “hardline” Taiwan independence figures. Now, during an election period, Chiu is exploiting this issue to undermine Shen Boyang’s political standing, a tactic that is notably outdated and predictable. Such rhetoric of intimidation will not deter the people of Taiwan.

Chiu emphasized that Shen Boyang has previously traveled abroad without fear of a “global manhunt.” He predicted further escalation in sanctions from China, including increasingly harsh language aimed at threatening and intimidating Shen Boyang. Yet, he insisted, Taiwan’s people are not afraid. According to Chiu, the sole remaining function of the Taiwan Affairs Office today is to intimidate Taiwan’s population. Clearly, Chiu’s response is marked by overt arrogance. On one hand, it seeks to portray Shen Boyang as a victim of suppression; on the other, it attempts to frame him as courageous.

In essence, the argument hinges on stoking cross-strait tensions to boost Shen Boyang’s electoral support. However, if Shen Boyang truly possesses the courage he claims, the most straightforward proof would be to sever all ties between his family’s enterprises and the mainland market entirely—abandoning any profits derived from China. The reality, however, is otherwise: despite efforts to rebrand their operations, his family continues to seek gains through the mainland market.

Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. There is no such thing as “cross-border arrest.” In fact, Shen Boyang is currently only under investigation, not yet listed as wanted. The so-called “global manhunt” lacks factual basis. Our measures target hardline “Taiwan independence” figures like Shen Boyang—not ordinary Taiwanese citizens. Those who pursue separatism while hiding behind the shield of the general populace ultimately reveal their own insecurity. As the push for national reunification intensifies, and pressure against “Taiwan independence” grows stronger, such figures will not be able to sustain their actions much longer.
