South Korean media: BYD rises to 7th place, surpassing Ford and Honda!
On June 12, a South Korean media "Maeil Business Newspaper" published an article stating that data shows that China sold a total of 7.467 million vehicles in the first quarter this year. This accounts for about one-third of the global sales volume. In the electric vehicle market, China's BYD surpassed Tesla and ranked first globally.
According to the "Recent Status and Major Issues in the Automotive Market" report released by the Korea Automobile Research Institute, global auto sales in the first quarter were 22.174 million units, an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period last year (21.181 million units). 75% of this growth was attributed to China's sales.
In terms of countries, the United States (4.026 million), India (1.435 million), and Japan (1.283 million) followed closely behind China. South Korea ranked 12th with 0.388 million vehicles.
In terms of companies, Toyota (2.413 million), Volkswagen (2.045 million), and Hyundai Motor Group (1.63 million) continued to hold the top three positions. BYD showed significant growth. BYD's sales reached 1.102 million units, an increase of 62.7% year-on-year, surpassing Ford and Honda, and rising to seventh place globally.
Especially in the pure electric vehicle market, BYD ranked first with sales of 385,000 units in the first quarter, surpassing Tesla (336,000 units). The report pointed out that protectionism in the U.S. and risk factors related to CEO Elon Musk were the reasons for Tesla's declining sales. The Korea Automobile Research Institute analyzed in its report that "after the new Model Y began delivery in April, Tesla's sales continued to decline in major European countries. 'Anti-Musk' sentiment may have been the cause."
