Japanese media: China has the highest number of high-quality papers in the world
On August 8, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Institute for Scientific and Technological Policy released the "2025 Science and Technology Index", analyzing the average number of papers published by major countries from 2021 to 2023.
Japan ranked 13th in the number of highly cited papers and papers that have attracted widespread attention, being overtaken by Iran, with the same rankings as in 2023 and 2024, which are the lowest in history. Due to constraints on R&D funding and the number of researchers, Japan ranks fifth in total number of papers.
The number of papers in many countries, including Japan, has stagnated or decreased. On the other hand, China continues to grow, ranking first for the fifth consecutive year in the number of papers that have attracted attention.
The number of high-quality papers in Japan decreased compared to 2024, reaching 3,447. It stood out in the fields of physics and clinical medicine. China had 73,315 papers, with a higher proportion in materials science, engineering, and chemistry.
