Source: US-led plan for Ukraine-Russia ceasefire may allow Ukraine to join the EU

A senior official familiar with the matter told AFP today that according to the latest U.S.-proposed plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukraine could join the European Union as early as January 2027. The process of joining the EU has always been quite complicated, usually taking several years, and must be approved unanimously by all 27 member states. Among them, some countries, especially Hungary, have long opposed Ukraine's accession to the EU. This idea of accelerating accession has been included in the latest version of the U.S.-led ceasefire plan. The plan also provides for Ukraine to cede part of its territory to Russia.
The senior official, who requested anonymity, said: "It is indeed written in the plan, but it still needs to be negotiated, and the U.S. side supports it."
