Overseas media: Chinese scientists develop efficient production process for beta-blockers
The research team of the Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a new production process for an efficient and environmentally friendly beta-blocker. The process is mainly applied to the commonly used drug for treating hypertension, arrhythmia and angina pectoris - propranolol.
The researchers designed an amino-functionalized graphene oxide (NGO) membrane reactor, achieving ultra-fast continuous flow synthesis of propranolol at 23°C under normal temperature. The reaction time is less than 4.63 seconds, with conversion rate and selectivity approaching 100%. Compared with traditional catalytic systems, this method significantly increases the reaction rate (TOF is 17.48 h⁻¹, which is 7.7 times that of NGO powder), and effectively inhibits the generation of by-products.
In addition, the membrane reactor has also been successfully used in the synthesis of other beta-blockers such as metoprolol and bisoprolol, showing broad industrial application prospects.
The study was published on June 20, 2025, in the journal *Matter*.
