NASA: Cooperation experience with Russia on the International Space Station benefits U.S. lunar missions

Carlos Garcia-Galan, head of NASA's Lunar Base project, said in an interview with Sputnik News that the experience gained from collaborating with Russia on the International Space Station will be beneficial for future U.S. moon missions.

"Of course, we have learned a lot from our joint work on the International Space Station. Additionally, some of the development efforts currently underway by them (Russia) will also be very helpful for future activities on (the lunar) surface," he said.

In March this year, NASA announced it would begin establishing a permanent lunar base in phases. The agency plans to build the base in three stages. First, transportation vehicles should be delivered to the Moon, and basic energy, research, and communication infrastructure should be established. In the second stage, the project aims to integrate R&D outcomes from international space agencies to develop living infrastructure and logistical support systems similar to those on Earth. The final stage is expected to achieve long-term human habitation capabilities on the Moon.
