European Poll: 74% of Public Hold Negative Views of the U.S.
According to a report by Japan's Kyodo News on May 9, the image of the United States in Europe is deteriorating.
According to the European Barometer survey released by the European Union (EU) on the 8th, the proportion of people with an unfavorable impression of the U.S. has risen to 74%, an increase of 14 percentage points compared to the previous survey conducted between October and November 2025. Only 24% of Europeans hold a positive view of the United States.
The same survey also found that 83% of Europeans have a negative impression of Russia, 61% have a negative impression of China, and 41% have a negative impression of India.
Meanwhile, tensions between Europe and the United States have intensified due to Trump’s consecutive imposition of tariffs on the EU, threats to the sovereignty of Denmark’s autonomous territory of Greenland, and the outbreak of a new round of conflict in the Middle East.
The European Commission declined to comment on the survey results.
EU Commission spokesperson Arianna Podestà stated: “The United States is an important partner for us, and we cooperate constructively on all issues of mutual concern.”
In the same survey, 73% of respondents described the EU as “a place of stability in an unstable world.”
The report also showed that the vast majority support stronger cooperation within the EU on defense and security, with 81% supporting common policies in this area—the highest level in the past 20 years.
The poll was conducted from mid-March to early April across all 27 EU member states, with over 26,000 respondents.
