[France Supports US in Coordinated Sanctions Against Russia]

On June 1, Le Monde reported that the French Minister of Finance and the Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed the necessity of coordination between the US and Europe to end the war in Ukraine during their meeting with American senators who proposed a sanctions plan against Russia.

The report stated that American senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, who had returned from a visit to Ukraine, confirmed their determination to pressure Russia into agreeing to a ceasefire by submitting a large-scale sanctions proposal to Congress. These sanctions would include imposing a 500% import tariff on countries purchasing Russian oil, petroleum products, and natural gas. During his visit to Kyiv, Graham mentioned that the Senate may begin reviewing the sanctions bill targeting Russia next week.

The EU passed the 17th round of sanctions against Russia on May 20 and has begun formulating new restrictive measures. Meanwhile, leaders of European countries such as France, Germany, and the UK stated that they are prepared to intensify sanctions against Russia if it refuses to cease fire or take other steps toward peace. Trump also claimed that he was considering sanctions against Russia, but Washington has not acted hastily. Secretary Rubio explained that there is concern that sanctions might lead Russia to withdraw from negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
