The Iranian Foreign Minister is heading to Geneva for talks, which leaders will attend the Geneva talks?
Hopes for easing tensions, but "the reality on the ground" is more attacks.
Al Jazeera reporter Toshid Asadi reported from Tehran that, as of Thursday (the seventh day of the conflict), attacks continued across Iran and into the night, with the capital's air defense systems still operational.
As military operations escalated, so did the rhetoric of Tehran officials.
Asadi said, "We have heard Iran repeat many times that as long as Israel's attacks continue, they will continue to retaliate."
The Iranian foreign minister is heading to Geneva to meet European foreign ministers in hopes of easing tensions. Asadi stated that Iranians are ready to "step back," but this is only possible if "Israel steps back."
"We see Israeli airstrikes continuing, but the reality seems far from it."
"We hear strong signals from different Iranian military officials saying they will continue to make Israelis bear the consequences of these airstrikes and will respond devastatingly in the future."
Which leaders will attend the Geneva talks?
As we previously reported, Iran will hold talks in Geneva, Switzerland, later today with European leaders in an attempt to reach a solution to end the conflict with Israel.
Here are the leaders expected to attend the talks:
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barro
German Foreign Minister Johann Waldfur
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kalas
Fearing that the U.S. might attack Iran alongside Israel, European leaders have been calling for de-escalation.
France, Germany, the UK, and the EU are signatories to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which stipulates that Iran reduce its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of global sanctions.
Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in his first term in 2018.
